WCTC to host virtual Black History Month Celebration Wed., Feb 22

Black History Month, an observance held each February, honors the triumphs and struggles of Black and African Americans throughout United States history.
On Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) will hold a special online event for Black History Month – Legalize Black History: Resisting Anti-Critical Race Theory Laws and Teaching the Truth About Systemic Racism – featuring book author and award-winning educator Jesse Hagopian.
The event is sponsored by WCTC’s Multicultural Engagement Center (MEC) and is open to WCTC staff, faculty, students as well as the greater community. Access to the meeting link can be found here.
Hagopian is a leading voice on issues of educational equity, the school-to-prison pipeline, standardized testing, the Black Lives Matter at School movement and social justice unionism. He is an author, public speaker, organizer and Ethnic Studies teacher at Seattle’s Garfield High School – the site of the historic teacher boycott of the MAP test in 2013. He is also an editor for Rethinking Schools magazine, which is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization dedicated to sustaining and strengthening public education through social justice teaching and education activism. In his presentation, he will examine the importance of an honest education and the Teach Truth movement.
