If you are currently a dental assistant, dental hygienist or have dental assistant experience and are interested in advancing your skills, this program might be for you.

An advanced technical certificate enables dental assistants to perform expanded duties under the supervision of a licensed dentist. Learn how to place and finish restorative material, pack cord, perform coronal polish, remove sutures and dressings, apply dental fluoride and sealants, take impressions, remove cement from crowns, make temporizations, adjust dentures and other removable oral appliances.

  • Apply online and pay the $30 application fee. This program is only open to in-state residents.
  • Submit proof of Dental Assistant experience 
    • Must have a current CDA (Certified Dental Assistant) credential.
    • OR at least 2 years (2,000 hours) of chairside dental assisting experience verified by a supervising dentist.
      • Student must submit this signed form.

Before class starts

Before beginning course, complete the following items:

  1. 508-101 Dental Health Safety and 508-304 Dental and General Anatomy prerequisite courses for this program. 
    • Submit unofficial college transcript indicating a C (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better in the above courses or complete a PLA (Prior learning assessment) for both courses.
  2. Provide proof of valid BLS Provider certification from the American Heart Association. WCTC also offers a BLS Provider Renewal course.
  3. Complete health and safety requirements.
  4. Complete Clinical Supervising Dentist Requirements

The EFDA program requires a Wisconsin-licensed dentist as a mentor/supervisor. The dentist’s responsibilities include:

  • The 508-124 EFDA Clinical course requires the supervising dentist to support the student to meet all course requirements.
  • Identifying appropriate procedures for the student to complete to meet course requirements.
  • Evaluating and providing written feedback on clinical skills. 
  • Verifying that all 508-124 EFDA Clincal competencies have been met successfully.

Work with your supervising licensed dentist to complete the Clinical Supervising Dentist Form.

Note: Students who have not completed these requirements will be dropped from courses.

Becoming EFDA Certified 

To become certified as an Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) in Wisconsin, you must apply online through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), pay the required fee, and submit proof of completing an accredited instructional program with at least 70 hours of classroom instruction. Before completing the program, you needed to have at least 1,000 hours of experience as a dental assistant and hold a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential, or have a minimum of 2,000 hours of experience verified by a supervising dentist.
