Student Spotlight: Meet Brittany Myers, Marketing student
“I’ve come from this shy state of myself, and now my confidence has bloomed. I’ve learned to believe in myself. WCTC has done an incredible job for preparing me for a successful career in marketing and has helped me grow personally and professionally.” -- Brittany Myers, Marketing student
For Brittany Myers, a current WCTC Marketing student, the path to higher education didn’t start off as smoothly as she had planned. Originally from a small, rural town 90 miles from Pittsburgh,
she struggled academically. The town, she said, was largely a retirement community short on resources and opportunity.
Her first attempt at a four-year college proved unsuccessful, and she remembers spending hours frustrated and crying over assignments she didn’t understand. After lacking a solid family support network, she took it upon herself to get tested for a learning disability. The results confirmed she processes and retains information at a slower rate. Unfortunately, by the time she was diagnosed, she was failing her classes and chose to drop out.
In her second attempt, this time at a community college, she had a negative classroom experience, which affected her to the point of not wanting to return to the schoolShe then spent the next few years working, dealing with life changes and figuring out her next steps. She relocated to Wisconsin in 2019 to be closer to her brother, got married and experienced the death of her father. She also dealt with some persistent health issues, including hyperthyroidism and Graves’ disease, which, she says, has been a tough journey to navigate.
Determination and another try
Now in her mid-30s, and nearly a decade after her previous post-secondary attempts, Myers was determined to give college a third try and enrolled at WCTC in 2023.
“I researched several schools and spoke with people about their experiences, and WCTC stood out because of its reputation, the services it has for students and supportive staff,” she said. "When I moved to Wisconsin, I felt better equipped to start college again.”
She began as a part-time student, recently moved to full-time status and has immersed herself into the WCTC experience – and successfully!
To date, she has earned certificates in Social Media as well as Sports and Entertainment Marketing, plus a technical diploma in Digital Marketing Promotions. She is in multiple honor societies – thanks to her impressive 3.94 grade point average – and she is involved with Collegiate DECA (earning a third place award at the State Collegiate DECA Conference in spring), the Student Leadership Council, the First Gen Club and the mentor program. She is also a student worker in Ollie’s Compass and the College Center front desk.
Hard work, perseverance the key to moving forward
Myers worked hard, used the many resources available to her and flourished under the hands-on education offered at WCTC. She’s slated to graduate and earn her associate degree in May 2027, and she plans to pursue a career in marketing and photography as well as continue her education and earn a bachelor’s degree.
“I’ve come from this shy state of myself, and now my confidence has bloomed. I’ve learned to believe in myself,” she said. “WCTC has done an incredible job for preparing me for a successful career in marketing and has helped me grow personally and professionally.”
