Discover Camp: Hands-on Career Exploration Summer Camp for Middle School Students

July 16-18, 2024 | 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. | $125

Explore your interests through a variety of interactive sessions while discovering new and exciting careers. Open to students entering grades 6, 7 and 8. Cost includes daily lunch* and a t-shirt. A limited number of scholarships may be available upon request.

Learn how technology and creativity blend in the world of design. Campers will rotate between sessions that focus on design skills in different occupations, including graphic design, web design, architectural drafting, interior design, kitchen and bath design, and laser cutting.

Discover how buildings are designed, built and repaired through hands-on experiences that focus on plumbing, electricity, heating/air conditioning, carpentry, architecture and diesel technology.

Explore the exciting world of manufacturing! In this camp you'll get an opportunity to explore different areas that work together to make many of the things you use today.

  • CNC: Use modern CNC machines in conjunction with CAD-CAM software technology to complete a take-home project.
  • Metal Fabrication and Welding: Apply safety principles, basic welding techniques, laser programming and cutting, and metal fabrication to make a take-home project.
  • Robotics: Discover how automated systems and robotics help with efficiency and accuracy in manufacturing.
  • Mechanical Systems: When machines and robots break down, industry relies on their most talented technicians to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair them. This session will teach you techniques that you could use in the field or at home.

Welcome to the world of engineering! Get an overview of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and robotics/automated systems. Learn basic design and engineering principles, and work with one of today’s most common embedded systems: the Arduino. Design circuit projects and write the Arduino code to see the circuits come to life! All participants will leave with an Arduino and kit of basic components.

Lunch Information

*Lunch and snacks are provided each day. Participants with dietary restrictions should contact camps@wctc.edu regarding dietary needs. Please note, we cannot guarantee we will be able to meet all requests. Students may choose to pack their own lunch to ensure safety.

 


More to Know

Students check in at and depart from Building S. Participants will only be released to the approved pickup contact(s) listed on their Agreement and Release form.

  • Drop off between 8:45 - 9 a.m.
  • Camps run from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • Pick up between 2:30 - 2:45 p.m.

Students must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes (i.e. sneakers) daily. Students not dressed appropriately may not be able to participate in that day's planned activities.

To ensure a positive experience and safety for all students, attendees are expected to adhere to the following camp guidelines:

  • Use lab equipment only under the direction and guidance of an instructor.
  • Treat all participants with respect.
  • Follow the directions of all WCTC staff and activity leaders.
  • Refrain from cell phone use during instruction and activities.
  • Use appropriate language.

Students demonstrating behavior that interferes with the safety or learning experiences of other camp participants will be removed from the program, and no refund will be given.

Refunds may only be made when written notice of cancelation and a request for refund is received 60 days prior to the first day of camp. All requests for refunds must be in writing and emailed to camps@wctc.edu.

Medical or Emergency Circumstances

In some cases, refunds may be granted after the cancelation and refund period for medical or emergencies circumstances. A written notice of cancelation with explanation of medical or emergency circumstances must be provided to camps@wctc.edu for a refund request to be considered. Partial or full refunds for medical or emergency circumstances will be at the discretion of WCTC after reviewing the request.

Inclement Weather 

Some activities may be canceled when weather conditions are unsuitable. Alternative activities will be provided. Camp sessions are held regardless of weather, but programs may be modified due to inclement weather. Refunds are not given when activities are canceled due to inclement weather.

Session Cancelation

If a program is canceled due to insufficient enrollment, every effort will be made to place campers in a similar program. If the College cancels a camp session and is unable to place participant in a similar program a full refund will be issued.

Changes in Cancelation and Refund Procedures

WCTC may make changes to cancelation and refund procedures when considering the health and safety of campers and staff. No refunds will be given for campers arriving late, leaving early, dismissed from camp, or unable to attend all or part of a session.
