David Sayas ’24 discovered the foundational tools he needed at WCTC to lead him on a journey to becoming a skilled craftsman.

As a high school senior, Sayas got a jump start on his career by taking carpentry classes through a dual enrollment initiative at WCTC, finishing all but a few courses due to other commitments at the high school. He later returned to the College, completed the remaining classes and earned his Building Trades-Carpentry technical diploma in 2024.

“I wanted to learn about carpentry so I could do repairs and renovations on my own house in the future,” he said. “I ended up really enjoying it and getting a job right after high school. I also came back to WCTC to finish three classes I missed due to sports obligations.”

Hands-On Training and Real-World Experience

While completing his studies at WCTC, which included Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 certification training, he gained proficiency using hand and power tools in both workshop and job site settings. He also developed essential techniques of the trade, such as wall layout, framing, roofing and general interior and exterior work.

Sayas Carpentry LLC specializes in finish carpentry and custom remodels. Owner and carpenter David Sayas started the business in 2025, with a focus on high-quality work and creating transformative kitchen and bathroom remodels in Waukesha County and surrounding areas.

As part of his hands-on experience, Sayas and his classmates helped build homes for a Habitat for Humanity subdivision, Domenica Park, in Waukesha. Students worked on various phases of construction, including framing and siding. In the workshop, they practiced cabinet installation, door and window installation, trim and basic drywall.David Sayas works on an interior door hinge

Building His Own Future

Sayas, who is in his 20s, knew early on that one day he would run his own business; it was his dream. But, he said, “I did not think that could become a reality so soon!”

He launched Sayas Carpentry LLC in June 2025, after spending a few years working at an integrated design-build firm and also helping to rebuild a historic log cabin in Fredonia, Wis. Additionally, he was inspired by a friend who started his own framing company.

“My schooling and hands-on training through WCTC, and my work at MKE Design Build, gave me the skills to start my own business,” Sayas said. “I think that gave me the confidence to go forward with my own company.”

Looking Ahead

Still early in his career, Sayas acknowledges WCTC for giving him a strong start. He is excited to see what’s ahead and how he will be able to grow his company in the coming years.

“I really wanted to start my own business so that I could have more freedom, be a leader, make bigger decisions and make a greater impact on the people I am doing work for. In the next three to five years, I would like to be managing my business while still working in the field,” he said. “(WCTC) has been the first step in getting me to where I am today.”
