Today’s ceremony marks an important transition in your life. I encourage you to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained at WCTC to become actively involved in your profession and the community in which you live and work. Use your education as a guide to direct the path of your future. With determination, optimism and patience, you can make a difference.
Our graduates have become leaders in their occupations and communities. We are proud of the important contributions they have made in Southeastern Wisconsin, and you will now have the opportunity to build upon this tradition.

The Meaning of Academic Regalia
Gowns were worn as early as the 12th century. Their primary purpose then was to protect the wearer against the elements. When accepted styles of dress began to change in the 16th century, those in the legal and medical professions as well as scholars in the universities retained the traditional dress of gowns and hoods. The origin of the cap is unclear.
Styles and colors had no particular meaning until 1985 when an intercollegiate code established design and color criteria. The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The master’s gown has an oblong sleeve open at the wrist; the rear part of its oblong shape is square cut and the front part has an arch cut away. The gown may be worn open or closed. The doctor’s gown is faced down the front in velvet with three bars of the same across the sleeves. It may be worn open or closed. The academic hood is the visual representation of the academic degree.
- The white stole and white tassel designates students who are members of the National Technical Honor Society. NTHS is an honor society for students who are enrolled in a one- or two-year technical program and are satisfying the grade point average (GPA) requirement of 3.0 or above.
- The blue and gold cords and gold tassel with PTK emblem designates students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa. PTK is an honor society for students who are enrolled in a two-year associate degree program and are satisfying the grade point average (GPA) requirement of 3.5 or above.
- The blue and gray cords are for first-generation students who are members of the Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha) honor society enrolled in a degree program and are satisfying the grade point average (GPA) requirement of 3.2 or above.
- The black tassel designates all graduates; the gold tassel designates president’s honor students with a 3.5 GPA or above; and the apricot tassel designates Nursing student graduates.
- The red tassel and cord designates graduates who are members of the Student Leadership Council (SLC).
- The light blue cord designates graduates who are recipients of a scholarship through the WCTC Foundation.

At WCTC, student learning extends beyond the classroom. As part of our Student Development model, we are committed to helping students grow as confident, capable individuals prepared for the next steps in their personal and professional lives. Throughout their time at WCTC, students engage with the Critical Life Skills, a set of core competencies intentionally woven into coursework, campus activities and student support services.

Scholarships
Each year the WCTC Foundation, through the generosity of donors and friends, provides an average of over $350,000 in scholarship funding to WCTC students. These scholarships provide a critical difference to the lives of our students and their educational advancement. Many of the graduates today may have been the recipient of scholarship funding through the WCTC Foundation.
To continue the scholarship support for future WCTC students, the WCTC Graduating Class Scholarship Fund has been established. In recognition of today’s graduates and their accomplishments, you are invited to consider a gift to this Scholarship Fund.
The WCTC Foundation extends it appreciation to its donors for their generous support of WCTC students and programs.
Professional Photography
Empire Photography has been photographing our commencement ceremonies for many years. Each graduate is photographed as they receive their diploma and a solo portrait is also taken after they exit the stage. Proofs will be sent to graduates and their families within 48 hours of the ceremony (if you preregister).
