Description

The goal of this course is to understand what types of Elder Financial Exploitation exist and resources that are available to assist in these types of investigations. 

We will explore multiple aspects of the following:

Scams that target the elderly

  •    How to identify
  •    Resources available
  •    How to identify and articulate undue influence

Power of Attorney Theft

  •    What it is
  •    How to Investigate it
  •    What to focus on to prove in court

Benefit Fraud

  •    Recipient/Provider Fraud
  •    Medical Assistant Fraud
  •    Food Share/EBT Fraud
  •    Resources to assist with investigations

We will dive deeply into those that we can investigate and review case studies regarding what has worked and not worked from previous investigations.

We will explore ways to collaborate early in the investigations to provide the best possible outcomes in prosecution.

This course will include teaching, active discussions, as well as group activities.

Instructor:

April DeValkenaere is a Wisconsin State Bar Certified paralegal focusing in white collar crime for the Waukesha County District Attorney's office.  She earned her Certified Financial Crimes Investigator (CFCI) from the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators (IAFCI) in December of 2018.  The same organization she has been a member of since 2015 and has held the office of chapter Vice-President and is currently holding the office of chapter President for the 2019-2020 term.  April is an active member of the Wisconsin Association of Fraud Investigators (WAFI) and the Financial Crimes Investigators (FCI) of greater Madison.  In 2018, she was also an active member of a sub-group of the AG's Task Force on Elder Financial Exploitation.  Currently, she is an active member of the AG's Coordinated Community Response (CCR) Team.
