A significant number of the students served by the unit have
a diagnosed learning disability or exhibit learning problems.
A Learning Disability is a generic term that
refers to a heterogeneous group of disorders evident because of
significant difficulties in learning (the use of listening, speaking,
reading, writing, reasoning, or mathematical abilities). Students
with learning disabilities have average or above average intelligence
despite their learning problems. With appropriate support, motivation,
and intervention, they can complete a college degree.
Another significant number of students we serve have motor/orthopedic,
health or sensory related disabilities. Academic support
services are also available to these students. Other specific
accommodations related to their disabilities are accommodated
on an individual basis.
Hearing and vision loss are
complex disabilities. For any individual with a significant hearing
loss, communication can be a challenge in the classroom. Academic
support services, interpreters, note takers, adaptive equipment
and testing alternatives are available to these students. Visually
impaired students are also provided with similar accommodations
to facilitate their integration into the classroom.
Because of the frequency of adjustment (psychological)
problems in the general population, students with these
disabilities are also present in the classroom. They too can succeed
in completing a college degree with appropriate support and intervention.
The Counselor for Students with Disabilities is available to assist
in counseling and referral to appropriate services. Accommodations
are arranged through the Special Services Coordinator or Counselor
for Students with Disabilities.
Test Accommodations
At WCTC, the goal in providing alternative testing to students
with disabilities is to minimize or eliminate the impact of
the disability. The Special Services staff acts as an extension
of the classroom instructors who have determined what information
the tests are to cover. The type of instrument may be something
that is subject to alteration depending upon disability, but
the materials covered on the test and the depth of the coverage
is determined by the instructor.
Testing accommodations for the COMPASS assessment test are
arranged through the Special Services Coordinator or Case Manager
for Students with Disabilities.
