English Language Learner- Waukesha
Beginning-Advanced/Levels 1-6
English Language Learner (ELL) is a comprehensive program for limited English proficient adults. Beginnings to advanced classes are offered in:
- Listening and Speaking
- Reading
- Writing and Grammar
Individualized reinforcement is provided in the lab, including the option to use software with voice recognition. Emphasis is on communication for functioning successfully in the workplace, in the community, and in higher education programs.
Testing and registration for new students is offered each semester. Classes at the Waukesha Campus and LaCasa de Esperanza start on June 23, 2008. Call 262.695.6500 to place your name on the registration and testing list. Waiting lists are in effect when classes are filled.

Welding
Students interested in occupations related to welding will have the opportunity to participate in a project that will provide courses and career selection services to students enrolled in English Language Learner programs. The students will participate in pre-technical programming that incorporates basic skills and ELL instruction in the content area of welding.
Students interested in welding careers will have the opportunity to develop pre-technical skills including workplace communication, appropriate math skills and other work related skills. An English Language Learner component will emphasize vocabulary and workforce communication to prepare them to enter the occupational programs.
Culinary
Students interested in occupations related to the Culinary Arts field will have the opportunity to participate in a project that will provide courses and career selection services to students enrolled English Language Learner. The students will participate in pre-technical programming that incorporates basic skills and ELL instruction in the content area of culinary arts. Students interested in culinary arts careers will have the opportunity to develop pre-technical skills including college success skills, workplace communication, appropriate math skills and other work related skills. An ELL component will emphasize vocabulary, career and school culture, and workforce communication to prepare them to enter the occupational programs.
Healthcare
Students interested in occupations in the health care field will have the opportunity to participate in a project that will provide courses and career selection services to students enrolled English Language Learner.
They students will have the opportunity to develop pre-technical skills including college success skills, workplace communication, medical terminology and understanding medical charts. An English Language Learner component will emphasize medical vocabulary and workforce communication to prepare them to enter the Certified Nursing Assistant and other health care programs
Life in the United States
Civic Literacy
Integrated Civics Literacy for English Language Learners provides experiential-based instructional activities to expose students to many governmental and community-based institutions-police, fire, health, library, employment, banking, voting, social service, and motor vehicle, to name a few-which affect their lives on a daily basis. Students participate in field trips and hear from a variety of speakers who introduce the students to the civics literacy skills that they need to be viable, functioning members of our society. This class is offered each semester.
U.S. Citizenship
Each semester, a course that will prepare individuals who are planning to take the examination required by the Immigration and Naturalizing Service (INS) to become a United States citizen is offered. The course provides a general introduction to significant dates, events and documents in United State history, as well as identification of Americans who played and important role in establishing the country. The course includes basic information on the development of the U.S. government and the rights and responsibilities of individuals in the country.
