Candidate Physical Ability Test - About the Course

Waukesha County Technical College is a regional testing center for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) for many fire departments in Southeastern Wisconsin. Tests (and their associated orientation sessions) are offered several times a year (typically over late Spring, Summer, and early Fall).

Candidates should review the Orientation Guide* for a complete description of the test. Candidates should also review the Candidate Guide* to familiarize themselves with the CPAT stations, requirements, expectations, and preparation information.

The WCTC Library has copies of video tapes that show the test and describe testing criteria. One tape (Candidate Instruction) is a walk through of the test describing testing procedures and criteria. A second tape (Program Overview) describes the origin of the CPAT test and its development. Each video tape is approximately 15 minutes in length. These tapes can be viewed in the WCTC Library, but are not available to be checked out to be taken home. The Candidate Instruction and Program Overview videos can also be viewed online by clicking on the appropriate link.

The CPAT Test includes an optional 4-hour practice/orientation session followed at least eight weeks later by the actual test session. Successful participants will receive a dated certificate of successful completion. Participants will be able to verify their test score and date through an official WCTC transcript.

For CPAT dates and times, please check the Spring/Summer/Fall course schedules or contact WCTC Fire Training at 262.691.5541. You must pre-register for the CPAT several weeks prior to the orientation session to reserve a spot.

If you are testing for a specific department, contact them for additional information and requirements.
