LPN Refresher Responsibilities
Student Responsibilities
Attendance at all classroom and clinical experiences is required.
Punctuality is expected. The student should be 5-10 minutes
early on the clinical days so that they are ready to begin
promptly at the start of the shift. Should an absence occur,
the student is expected to notify WCTC faculty at 262-691-5149,
and the clinical site, if the absence occurs during a clinical
day.
The student is asked to take responsibility for their own
learning by providing written goals at the beginning of each
week. They will be reviewed with the faculty and mentor during
the weekly communication. The goals should be used as a guide
for student assignments. The goals should be reflected on at
the end of each wek of clinical and carried into the following
week if necessary.
Additional Student Responsibilities
- Communicate any difficulties with assignments, etc. to the
WCTC faculty.
- Complete a written self-evaluation at the midpoint and end
of the program.
- Complete a program evaluation at the conclusion of the LPN
Refresher program.
Accidents of any kind involving a patient or WCTC student
require an Incident (Accident) Report. The WCTC instructor
and/or mentor will assist the student. Accidents or injury
must be reported to the instructor within 24 hours. The student
may be directed to the office of the WCTC Community Nursing
Clinic (CNC), S-173. WCTC does not carry insurance covering
accidental injury to students. Costs incurred as a result of
a doctor or hospital visits are the student’s responsibility.
Mentor Responsibilities
- Review course objectives with faculty
- Report any attendance issues with faculty
- Make out assignments in collaboration with student and in
consultation with WCTC faculty.
- Mentor is asked to provide regular feedback to the
student and faculty.
- Provide input for the final student evaluation
Faculty Responsibilities
- Collaborate with student to arrange for appropriate clinical
placement
- Ensure that all prerequisites have been completed prior to
student participation in clinical
- Coordinate the orientation of the student to the clinical
facility
- Provide the course description, objectives, guidelines,
evaluation criteria, for the mentor(s), nurse manager/educator
prior to the beginning of the clinical experience
- Orient preceptor(s) to the mentoring concept and role,
expectations
- Confer with nurse manager/educator as needed
- Communicate weekly with mentor and student and provide
guidance as needed
- Collaborate with mentor and students for clinical assignments
as needed
- Solicit feedback from mentor and student for final student
evaluation
- Conduct final student evaluation
