The refresher student will be asked to provide input for selection
of the clinical site. The student should consider where they
see themselves working upon completion of the course (i.e.
acute care, long term care, clinic, other) as well as previous
nursing experience. A clinical site will be selected based
upon input from the student. However, it is ultimately the
responsibility of WCTC faculty to arrange for available placement.
The clinical site will provide a nurse mentor. Student assignments
for learning experiences shall be made by the mentor in collaboration
with the student, and in consultation with WCTC faculty as
needed. The student should proceed at a pace that is comfortable
and safe for them. The student is not to be considered in the
staffing ratios of the facility.
The clinical experience usually consists of 3-eight hour shifts
per week (24 hours). It may include evenings or weekends, depending
on the mentor’s schedule. The student will be given the
name and contact information for the mentor. The student will
be expected to contact the mentor to discuss the clinical schedule
and communicate it to the WCTC faculty. The student may be
working with more than one mentor.
WCTC faculty will communicate weekly to collaborate with the
mentor and student, and to provide guidance as necessary. WCTC
faculty will be available for phone consultation as needed
by either student or mentor at any time.
The goal of the clinical experience is to put theory and skills
into practice. Upon completion of the program, the student
should be ready for an orientation program in a health care
facility as a licensed practical nurse.
The health care agency is not under any obligation to offer
the student a position upon completion of the program.
The student is not under any obligation to apply for a position
at the health care agency unless it is their wish to do so.
