520 Hour Police Academy

Law Enforcement Recruit Academy

WCTC’s Criminal Justice - Law Enforcement Academy enables recruits to become certifiable as a law enforcement officer and enhances their ability to get hired with a law enforcement agency. This 520-hour program builds on previous classroom knowledge and offers hands-on experience in areas such as defense and arrest tactics, firearms, emergency vehicle operation and traffic stop procedures.

The Academy runs 13 weeks. Admission is restricted to those who qualify under Wisconsin Department of Justice administrative rules. Candidates must possess at least 60 college credits, undergo a criminal history and driver record check, successfully complete a medical examination by a licensed health care provider and participate in a personal screening interview. Recruits are responsible for the cost of a weapon, magazines and other related duty gear in addition to tuition and study materials.

Student are required to furnish

  • Firearms (recommend 9mm, 40 cal., or 45 cal. semi-auto, double action)
  • Two spare magazines for automatic pistols (3 total)
  • Pistol cleaning kit
  • Ear/eye protection for shooting
  • Duty belt with holster, magazine holders and belt keepers
  • Navy blue tactical pants
  • Black tactical boots or black cross training shoes
  • Academy uniform shirts (if accepted, you will receive an order form. Shirts will be delivered the first week of class)

Entrance Requirements - Self sponsored/Pre-Service

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Have achieved at least 60 fully accredited college credits
  • Possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license or other such valid operators permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as authorizing operation of a motor vehicle
  • Complete an oral interview with a panel
  • Undergo a criminal history records check
  • Undergo a physical assessment
  • Complete a DJ-LE-330 form

Entrance Requirements - Law Enforcement Agencies

  • Agency should sign up on the website at least one month prior to start of academy.
  • Agency must complete and send in a DJ-LE-303 form prior to officer beginning training. This form is available only through the Dept. of Justice, contact Carolyn Olson, 608.264.6377.

Apply to the Academy - Application Packet

  1. Obtain a copy of your driver’s license.
  2. Obtain your official college transcripts.
  3. Obtain a copy of your high school diploma.
  4. Complete DJ-LE-330 form, Application for Employment as a Law Enforcement or Jail Officer. Fill out form online and print, handwritten forms not accepted. You do not need to fill out questions in section 6.
  5. Complete MV2896 - Vehicle/Driver Record Information Request and mail with the $7 fee to:

    The record needs to go directly to WCTC, so include a stamped envelope addressed to:

  6. Complete DJ-LE-250, Wisconsin Criminal History Single Name Record Request, and mail with the $18 fee to:

    State of Wisconsin Department of Justice
    PO Box 2688, Madison, WI 53701-2688

    The record needs to go directly to WCTC, so include a stamped envelope addressed to:

  7. Complete and mail items 1 - 4 prior to application deadline to:

    Items 5 and 6 must also reach our office prior to the deadline

    Complete applications will be reviewed and those chosen will be invited to interview with a panel of criminal justice executives. Those accepted in the program will be notified approximately one month prior to the start of training. Do not include any other items, except for those mentioned above, in the application packet.

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or accepted. We will use your application for consideration for two academies only. After that time you will need to resubmit all the application materials.

After Acceptance

You will be required to undergo a physical assessment, at your own expense. Please have your physician complete the DJ-LE-332 Physicians Assessment. Do not complete until you have been accepted in the program. Bring with you to the first day of class.

Also, the first day of class, you are required to bring a certified copy of your birth certificate.(Do not send prior). You cannot begin the academy without a certified copy.
