Emergency Medical Technician - Basic
About the Program
5-credit technical diploma
Representing entry-level training in emergency medicine, EMT-Basic gives students the skills and knowledge to assess and manage all types of injuries and acute illnesses while providing safe and rapid patient transport to a medical facility. Upon program completion, students are prepared to take the National Registry examination to be licensed as an EMT-Basic in Wisconsin. Students wishing to pursue other levels of EMS licensure (Intermediate Technician or Paramedic) within Wisconsin must first be licensed as EMT-Basics before being eligible to register in subsequent EMS licensure programs.
- EMT-Basic courses are available every fall and spring semester. EMT-Basic is not available over the summer term.
- Evening course options available (evening section priority is given to individuals affiliated with local fire departments or EMS providers).
- EMT-Basic offerings include mandatory American Heart Association CPR for Healthcare Providers and clinical experience at a local hospital emergency department.
- Students enrolling in the EMT-Basic program must pass a Criminal Background Check as well as meet several health requirements (including specific immunizations). Failure to meet these requirements will preclude students from successfully completing the EMT-Basic program.
- Program admission and course registrations are coordinated through the Fire and EMS Training Department. Students seeking information on the program should not contact Registration. Rather, please contact the Fire and EMS Training Office at 262.691.5541 for more information regarding the program or to enroll.
- Fall registration starts on June 1.
- Spring registration starts on November 1.
