About the Placement Tests

Waukesha County Technical College administers the ACCUPLACER® and ASSET college placement exams to measure a student's proficiency in specific academic areas. Some type of placement (ACT, ACCUPLACER®, Asset or prior coursework) is required by anyone taking credit classes with either a reading, writing or math prerequisite. Placement scores will determine what courses a student can enroll in for their first semester, which will affect how quickly a student can complete a degree at WCTC.

ACCUPLACER®, developed by The College Board, is administered on the computer and is untimed, the typical test-taker will need approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the exam.

ACCUPLACER® tests skills in the following areas depending on the courses required for their program:

  • Reading Comprehension - The Reading Comprehension test, comprised of 20 questions, measures your ability to understand what you read, to identify main ideas and to make inferences. You need to distinguish between direct statements and secondary or supporting ideas.
  • Sentence Skills - The Sentence Skills test, comprised of 20 questions, measures your understanding of sentence structure — what makes a sentence complete and clear. Some questions deal with the logic of the sentence, and others with the relationships between two sentences.
  • Arithmetic - The Arithmetic test, comprised of 17 questions, measures your ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and to solve problems that involve fundamental arithmetic concepts.
  • Elementary Algebra - The Elementary Algebra test, comprised of 12 questions, measures your ability to perform basic algebraic operations and to solve problems involving elementary algebraic concepts.

ASSET, developed by ACT, is a paper-and-pencil timed test used for students needing accommodations.

  • Reading - Measures ability to find specific information within the text and make logical inferences beyond the text information. Focus is placed on reading comprehension.
  • Writing - Measures understanding of appropriate use of grammar, punctuation, writing style and writing strategy; review essay to find and correct errors.
  • Mathematics - Assesses skills in basic math through algebra, depending on skill level and based on the intended program of study.
