What Will I Be Tested On?
The COMPASS Placement Test measures your proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, and math.
- The reading skills test measures your ability to find specific information in text and to make logical inferences that extend beyond the text information. You will be asked to read a passage, and then the computer will ask you questions to check your comprehension.
- The writing skills test measures your understanding of appropriate usage in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, writing strategy and writing style. You will be asked to read an essay, and then find the mistakes in the passage, and correct them.
- The mathematics skills test assesses your knowledge and skills on everything from basic math, to college algebra, depending on your math skills. As you get questions correct, the computer will give you harder questions. The computer will continue this until your current mathematics skill level is verified. You may use a calculator on this test, as well as scrap paper. You may bring your own calculator or use the built-in calculator on the computer.
Sample questions are available at the ACT website.
